
Trudeau, Trump wage war against each other
Donald Trump's threats of tariffs are now fact. The decision leaves many wondering how it will affect Canada's economy.
Yesterday morning, Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada. The tariffs will be officially implemented on Feb. 4.
In a fact sheet released by the White House, the reasoning for the tariffs came from an alleged crisis between both country's borders. The fact sheet reported that illegal drugs and migrations have been pouring down into the United States from the Canadian border.
In their effort to prevent Illegal drugs and immigration from entering the United States, the tariffs will hold Canada accountable, according to the fact sheet.
Currently, the fact sheet states that Canadian goods, excluding fuel, will be tariffed with a 25 per cent tariff on Feb. 4. Canadian fuel will be tariffed at 10 per cent.
Responding to the tariffs, Justin Trudeau said in a media meeting yesterday that the government will impose tariffs on U.S. goods. The Government of Canada will set tariffs to 25 per cent. These tariffs will begin on Feb. 4.
According to the Government of Canada's website, $30 billion worth of goods will be affected by tariffs on the U.S.. The government will also impose an additional $ 125 billion in tariffs on U.S. goods in 21 days. More measures will take place should the U.S. continue its trade war with Canada.
In a news conference in Vancouver, Pierre Polilierve told reporters, " There is no justification for these tariffs or this treatment ... Canada will never be the 51at state."
CBC reports that provinces across Canada have begun removing American liquor from their stores and replacing them with Canadian brands.
Albertan Premier Danielle Smith responded to the tariffs on her X account Saturday," Alberta will do everything in its power to convince the U.S. President and Congress, as well as the American people, to reverse this mutually destructive policy." Smith has been vocal about Canada continuing exports to the U.S., instead, Smith wants to work with members in Washinton and remove the tariffs.
